Maine Celebrates Volunteer Week

Governor LePage encourages Mainers to be involved with their communities

Governor Paul R. LePage has urged Maine citizens to volunteer and to get involved in Volunteer Week, April 21-27, organized by the Maine Commission for Community Service. Maine joins the national celebration of volunteers across the county during this special week.

Please come join us in a celebration of life for David Ramsay. It will be held on April 27, 2013 at the St. Croix Country Club in Calais Maine at 2:00pm. A light lunch will be served. All are welcome. Come share your memories of David. Hope to see you all there. David’s family.

DORA N. “DODIE” ORENSTEIN

Dodie went home to eternal glory on April 17, 2013 at age 88. She was born in Wea Township, Kansas on April 7, 1925 to Charles Edgar Becker and Margie Elizabeth (Smith) Becker. During her lifetime, after serving in the WACs during WWII, she met her husband, Frederick Orenstein who was stationed at Ft. Riley, Kansas.

DOROTHY “DOT” WHITE

Alexander – Dorothy “Dot” Jean White, 86, passed away Thursday, April 18, 2013 with her family by her side.  Dot was born in Cooper on October 3, 1926, daughter of the late George and Mary (Buck) Flood.  She attended schools in Cooper and worked as a stitcher for Ware Knitters in Calais until she married her love, Calvin White on November 23, 1946.

History: Who, What, When and Why

Roy Ryan had a newsstand on Main Street just above what was most recently Bernardini’s Restaurant. In addition to papers, books and magazines he sold postcards. This 1917 photo shows the post card rack and if you zoom in the usual Post Office, Grammar School and Opera House post cards can be easily identified. There are also a lot of rather risque cards which were very popular at the time.

Calais Rec. Basketball`

 In game two, The Highlighters came out on top over Team Orange, 65 to 58.  Darcey Gillespie led The Highlighters with 31 and teammate Rachel Atkinson chipped in with 13.   Julia Nichols had a game high 32 points for Team Orange while Ivy Turner tossed in 15.  Pictured is Julia Nichols making a fancy pass over her head to teammate Ivy Turner who laid it up and in.

Financial Fitness Fair to be held at Machias Memorial High School

MACHAIS - The Washington County Disability Asset Network , along with several local and state organizations, is sponsoring a Financial Fitness Fair titled, “Stretch your Dollar”, on Saturday, April 27th from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Machias Memorial High School. This event is free and open to the public.

Mother’s Day Tea

You are invited to a public Mother’s Day Tea to be held on Saturday, May 11th from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Burnham Tavern Museum in Machias. The event is being sponsored by the Hannah Weston Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution for the benefit of the historic Burnham Tavern Museum.

2013 Annual Awards/ Recognition Ceremony - Maine Warden Service

The Maine Warden Service held its annual awards ceremony today at the Winslow VFW. The Warden Service recognized both game wardens and other individuals for their work and dedication to the Department and State of Maine in 2012.
