Volunteers Needed for Salmon Project

 Machias, Maine – A effort is underway to raise the pH and calcium levels in Beaver Dam Stream in Wesley through a project at Downeast Coastal Conservancy’s Beaver Dam Stream Preserve.  The increased pH and calcium levels will enhance the habitat for Atlantic Salmon.

Washington County Sheriff’s Office Report

August 30 – September 5, 2013

This week the Washington County Sheriff’s Office responded to 71 calls for service.  Notable complaints are noted below:

Cpl Ralph Pineo investigated a report of a burglary in Addison.  A home had been broken into and several items were reported missing.  Investigation continues.

SWOAM St. Croix Chapter Mushroom Walk at Maine Coast Heritage Trust Sipp Bay

The St. Croix Chapter of Small Woodland Owners Association of Maine (SWOAM) invites the public to a mushroom walk at Maine Coast Heritage Trust (MCHT), Sipp Bay property September 21, 2013 at 9:00AM to 11:30AM. Following the walk, a “bring-your-own” picnic is planned at the beach.  The walk will be led by Kirk Gentalen.

Our calendar summer is almost over.  The weather experts are threatening frost so I know that cooler weather is about to turn into even cooler weather. On the farm this was a season of great activity.  The vegetables had to be harvested, taken under cover and stored either in the cellar or canned or frozen.  Everyone had a hand in the process.

DONALD T. BURGESS

CALAIS – Donald T. Burgess, 58, passed away September 11, 2013 in Calais surrounded by his loved ones.  Donnie was born to Robert B. and Betty (Tupper) Burgess September 23, 1954 in St. Stephen, New Brunswick.  He grew up in Calais where he met and married his best friend and soul mate, Mary-Jo Gillespie on March 18, 1978.

CALAIS – Margaret P. Peakall, 86, passed away at home on September 11, 2013.  Margaret was born to Harry and Daisy (Alexander) Tupper on September 9, 1927 in Calais where she grew up and graduated High School.  She married John Stanley Peakall in Calais where they raised their four children and enjoyed over fifty years of marriage.

Perry – Margaret Elizabeth Quinn, 84, passed away Tuesday, September 3, 2013 at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.  Margaret was born in Lubec on April 13, 1929, daughter of the late Frank and Ethel (Butler) Cox.  She attended school in Lubec and worked in the local sardine factories until she married Edgar Quinn.
