WHS Kids Donate to Make A Wish Foundation

The boys in the life skills class at Woodland High School surprised their tech helper on Monday. The boys turned in all of the bottles and cans they had collected on Friday and presented Ms. Becky Varnum with a check that will go to her favorite charity, Make A Wish Foundation. Ms. Varnum has sponsored children to the program and also volunteered at the program in Florida.

Pajama Day at WHS

Food Pantry Donation

This group of 9- and 10-year olds has been friends for most of their short lives.  After some thought on how they could help the Irene Chadbourne Ecumenical Food Pantry in its quest for a $30,000 expansion, the boys have set out to raise $1,000 collectively.

HERMON - Harvey Cawley died February 9, 2014 at home in Hermon, Maine, surrounded by his loving family.  He was born May 3, 1926 in Calais, Maine, the son of Foster and Winifred Cawley.  He grew up in Robbinston where he attended grade school and graduated from high school at Calais Academy in 1943.

The Great Backyard Bird Count

The Great Backyard Bird Count/GBBC will be February 14-17, 2014. During the 2013 GBBC people watched birds in 109 countries of the world and submitted their checklists. All sorts of records were set, counting 34,512,432 individual birds on 134,935 checklists and recording 3,610 species - about one-third of the world’s 10,000 bird species.

The weather has been seasonably cold, oil is more expensive and the furnaces are thumping along waiting for a break.  We received about six inches of snow last Wednesday.  The roads were slippery so schools were closed and bingo and Community Café cancelled.  It was a quiet week.

Barnard Retirement Celebration

A special retirement celebration was held at the Calais Fire Station on Sunday honoring Lieutenant Dick Barnard.  Dick has been dedicated to the Calais Fire Department and to the citizens of Calais since April 30, 1975.  He is the first retiree of the department since Don Perkins—whom Dick replaced—in 1977.  Pictured left to right are Captain Richard Mingo, Lt.
