Baileyville Student Honored for Outstanding Volunteer Service at Award Presentation

Brianna Jack of Baileyville, a fifth-grader at Woodland Elementary School, will be presented with an engraved silver medallion to recognize her selection by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards as one of Maine’s top two youth volunteers of 2014.

WOW what a long winter. I was talking with a guide in Grand Lake Stream and he was saying there is nearly 30” of ice still in the lake!  It will be a late “ice out” this year. The positioning of the sun will win! Spring and summer will arrive.

MEDDYBEMPS – Edward Pomeroy Ketchen, 94, passed away peacefully Thursday, March 27, 2014 at the Calais Regional Hospital with family by his side.  He was the husband of the late Joan (Dripps) Ketchen who passed away March 23, 2007.  Born in Hartford, CT on July 12, 1919, he was the son of the late Benjamin and Ora (Pomeroy) Ketchen.

St. Croix Valley International Garden Club Anniversary

St. Croix Valley International Garden Club will begin the 2014 season by celebrating the 35th anniversary of their founding. An opening luncheon/meeting will be held on Wednesday, April16 at the Old Schoolhouse Restaurant in Princeton. Attendees should arrive at 11:30 a.m. and lunch will be served at 12:00 noon.

In the “old days” when I was a kid, one of the best days of the winter was when we would make home made ice cream.  This undertaking did not happen often and perhaps that was why it was so much fun.

Calais Police Report

On 3-31-14 Officers arrested Richard Quinn, 48, of Perry.  A report was received by this department alleging that Mr. Quinn was seen in his employer’s vehicle and subsequently over $1000.00 was missing.  Mr. Quinn was charged with burglary of a motor vehicle and transported to Washington County Jail
