Memorial Day Weekend. Saturday, May 24th at 09:00: Raising of the Flags at Calais Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery.

Followed by placing flags on our Veterans’ graves. Everyone welcome. Monday Memorial Day May 26th, 09:30, assemble at Post office parking lot.

The Robbinston Grange met last Monday, May 12 at the Sewall Memorial Congregational Church. It was decided to have a clean-up day on Saturday, May 24 starting at 10:00 a.m. This is so we can meet on June 9 in the Grange Hall.

Don’t forget the Spring Fling on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Grades k-2 donated items related to swimming; grades 3-5 donated items related to gardening; grades 6-8 donated items related to sports and outdoor games.

The 8th grade class trip is June 2-4.

Copies of Meddybemps 2013-2014 Annual Report are available to residents at Meddybemps Community Center and Tammi Smith’s accounting office in Calais.  The independent auditors statements about Meddybemps financial positions indicate that our community’s business is well managed and meets required standards.  

Great Garden Plot at AES

Students in K-4, Kindergarten and 1st grades are learning about plants and how they grow.  On Tuesday, May 13th, Agronomist and Soil Scientist Tim Sanford came to the Alexander Elementary School to tell the children about garden soil.  The classes have been learning about seeds, roots, plants and leaves.  Mr.


Baileyville – Shawn Ryan Donahue Sr., 41, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, May 17, 2014 with his wife and son by his side.  Shawn was born in Houlton on May 22, 1972, son of Frederick and Deborah (Peters) Donahue.  He graduated from Calais High School, Class of 1990, and worked for his father’s business, Donahue Auto Supply.

DECH Births

To Leslie and Troy Leighton of Jonesboro, Maine. A boy, Coby Kenneth Leighton born on May 14, 2014 weighing 7lbs., 14oz., 191/2 inches long.

To Brent and Sara Griffin of Edmunds Township. A boy, Brett Dale Griffin born on May 15, 2014, weighing 7lbs., 3oz., 193/4 inches long.

It looks as though we will have about a month of spring before the calendar summer begins.  Much greenery has appeared on the lawns and in the trees and the forsythias are in beautiful bloom.

Victoria Day in Canada May 19th. In 1845 Queen Victoria planted Myrtle at the Osborne House on the Isle of Wight.

Spring has finally arrived with long, warm days, sunny skies and as of Sunday, blackflies! I have started walking again, people are out on their bicycles and motorcycles.

The community of Grand Lake Stream is cordially invited to a Coffee in honor of Mark Berry who will be leaving the Downeast Lakes Land Trust on June 6 after serving as Executive Director for eight years.  It will be held on May 27 from 8 A.M. to 10 A.M. at the Schoolhouse.
