Calais High School

Joyous news: the midterms are over.  I’d like to say that cheers filled the halls when the final bell rang, but let’s be honest, students left that school as fast as they could.

They returned this week, however, and jumped right back into their academics and activities.  In fact, last Saturday two important competitions took place.  Our cheerleaders competed in Bangor at the Eastern Maine Championships and came within one point of reaching the state competition.  Everyone on the team did an incredible job, and although they will not be progressing any further, everyone is very proud of them.

The Academic Decathlon team also competed in their Regional Competition against Woodland.  Both teams did very well and are now preparing for the State Competition in March.  Also, this Tuesday the decathletes wrote their essays that will be submitted for state judging.  Also in the realm of academic testing, the Math Team is competing this week!  Good luck to all of our studious competitors.

The concert band is also very busy right now.  This Thursday, several musicians are traveling to Brewer for the District Six Band Festival.  On February 4th, the band is hosting a McTeacher Night at the Calais McDonald’s from four to six pm.  The teachers hoping to serve you include Mrs. Brennan, Mr. Moody, Mrs. Ellis, and Mr. Clark.  The band would like to acknowledge the support of McDonald’s and all the great help that the community has given them.

As February begins, students look with great anticipation towards Winter Carnival, basketball tournaments, and February vacation.  This is also the time of many college acceptance letters and high pressure preparation for graduation.  (Wow, February’s a busy month.)  We all wish great success upon the seniors trying to plan their futures and the underclassmen still working in high school endeavors.
