WCCC Frosty Fun in February Day

CALAIS - The Frosty Fun in February Day is back and the Washington County Community College staff is gearing up and planning an exciting day for everyone.

The annual event runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 9, at the Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge.

Interested in learning how to snowshoe? Well, this is your time.

Have you wanted to don skis and try swishing across the powder? Here is your opportunity.

The event is open to all those interested in cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. There is even time set aside for a lesson in the winter ecology of the refuge. And you don’t have to be an expert to attend. There will be lessons for the novice skiers and those who want to try snowshoeing. The WCCC staff will have equipment available for the day.

“This is a free family-friendly event,” WCCC Outdoor Adventure Center coordinator Chris Woodside said. “This is a great introduction for everything. They will learn how to do cross country skiing in a very flat non-threatening environment,” he said.

Last year participants ranged in age from 4-years-old to senior citizens.

There will be two different sessions from 10 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 3 p.m. Lunch will be free to the participants.

And the day offers a variety of fun.

“Say someone wants to do the introduction to snowshoeing in the morning and in the afternoon go on the ecology tour,” he said. “Or maybe they want to learn how to snowshoe in the morning and ski in the afternoon.”

Those who wish to go on their own once they’ve learned the basics can do so as long as they are back by 3 p.m., he said.

Interested in sledding? Bring your sleds and try out the big hill at the refuge.

Families and individuals who wish to participate should follow the signs to the YCC building on the refuge. Registration is from 9 to 10 a.m. WCCC equipment will be available on a first come first served basis. Last year more than 60 people attended.

“Last year, we had plenty of equipment for everyone including youngsters,” he said. “I hope this year we have an even bigger turnout.”

Woodside said he is positive that Mother Nature will cooperate. “There will be snow. I am going to think positive here and put it out in the universe,” he said with a smile. However, if Mother Nature does not cooperate, information about the event will be updated on Facebook at Facebook.com.WCCC/OAC and WQDY-WALZ FM.
