Calais High School

It’s here!  The most wonderful time of the year!

(If you are thinking of Christmas, you’re a little confused.)

It’s Winter Carnival week and everyone is going crazy trying to become the champion class.  The halls are abuzz with energy as students devote their afternoons and evenings to painting banners, sculpting snow, decorating hallways and practicing skits.

The first day of competition started out very well.  It was hat day and a whopping one hundred percent of every single class participated!  That’s right, every single student in the school wore a hat for this event.  Most people also joined in the first game of the week, crab soccer.  The seniors took a sweeping victory, followed by the juniors, sophomores, and then freshmen.  In the after school game, life-size foosball, seniors won again!  They were followed by the sophomores, juniors, and then freshmen.

The rest of the week will be filled with games such as skin the snake, amoeba, and balloon tag.  In addition to the games, there are dress-up themes every day of the week.  Tuesday is Nerd Day, Wednesday is Flashback Day, Thursday is Character Day, and Friday is Class Color Day.  Don’t forget about the collection items (old towels, paperback books, can tabs, and pennies), as well as theme items being made after school.  Whew, that’s a lot of events.

So far the rankings are very typical (seniors to freshmen)- but will it stay?  Or will another class upset the seniors to take the title?

We won’t know until the highlighter dance.  This incredibly popular dance, at which all the results of the week are announced (including Spirit Cup and Spirit King and Queen), will be held on Friday night from seven to eleven.

Winter Carnival is on everyone’s mind, but there are many other activities coming up.  There are competitions approaching for wrestling, basketball, Academic Decathlon, drama club, SkillsUSA, and the jazz band.  And let’s not forget vacation next week!  Good luck to everyone in their competitions and Winter Carnival… and may the odds be ever in your favor.
