D & G Auto Service’s mechanic Gary Gillespie works on a vehicle repair, while owner Denise Marrs discusses upcoming appointments with him.  D & G Auto Service is a full-service garage locally owned and operated by Denise and her husband Gary Marrs.

Main Street recently became home to a new business, D & G Auto Service.  Owners Denise Marrs and husband Gary, along with mechanic Gary Gillespie, officially began welcoming customers from both sides of the border on Monday, April 8th.

Located at the former J.D. Thomas garage, the renovated full-service garage has all new equipment and offers all of the standard auto repair services.  And soon, D & G Auto Service will become a full service gas station.  Denise Marrs says the inspection of the existing tanks and pumps should take place in the next couple of weeks and any necessary repairs or replacements will be made immediately.

The business also offers free shuttle service to in-town residences and to area businesses for its customers who prefer to go home or run errands over waiting for their repairs to be completed.  Marrs hopes to also add motorcycle repair to the mix, along with Maine state inspections of motor vehicles and motorcycles.  The garage will also carry supplies such as batteries, windshield wipers, and tires, among other things.

Marrs is no stranger to entrepreneurship.  She and her husband own Gary’s Taxi.  As well, she owned and operated her own salon as a hair dresser for forty years.  She is also no stranger to auto repair.

Starting at the age of only 5, Marrs spent numerous hours with her father who worked as a mechanic.  She became her father’s “little grease monkey,” she said, fixing and repairing alongside him dressed in her little girl clothes.  “We were inseparable,” Marrs said.

From hair salon to auto repair, Marrs explained it was an easy decision. “I knew I could do it.  My father was a mechanic.  My oldest son is a mechanic.  My youngest son helps out.”  The support and encouragement from her family motivated her to move forward with her idea of owning the garage.

“It’s definitely a family affair,” Marrs said.  “Both children love it and I know my father would have loved it.  And I have my helpful other half,” with regards to her husband.  Open Monday through Friday from 7:00 to 5:00 and Saturdays from 7:00 to noon, the locally owned and operated D & G Auto Service can be reached at 454-9900.
