Calais Walmart creates approximately 80 additional jobs. Store open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week

CALAIS, Maine, Sept. 25, 2013 – An expanded Walmart will unveil the changes Wednesday, Oct. 2, after a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony at 7 a.m. The expanded store at 379 South St. is conveniently located and is open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week. It will provide Calais residents with one-stop shopping convenience for their grocery and general merchandise needs. The store also offers pharmacy services.

The expansion adds approximately 20,000 square feet to the existing store and will allow for a larger selection of merchandise for customers. New departments include produce, a deli and a bakery.

“I commend Walmart for its growth and investment in the Calais community,” said Governor Paul R. LePage. “By expanding its store and adding 80 new jobs, Walmart is now providing almost 200 jobs to the community, as well as offering more merchandise and services. I also commend Walmart for its dedication to fighting hunger by donating food to the community’s most needy. This is an example of how a business can truly invest in the community.”

One-Stop Shopping Convenience

The store features quality, value-priced general merchandise, including apparel, electronics, toys, sporting goods, and lawn and garden items. It also offers a full line of groceries, including organic and natural selections in addition to local favorites. Some local products available include frozen Wyman’s berries.

The pharmacy offers a full range of products and services. Pharmacy team members can answer product and prescription questions and customers can ask about health and wellness solutions.

Community Giving

The grand-opening celebration also includes presentations of $2,500 in grants from Walmart to local community groups.

In addition to the grants given as part of the grand opening, the new store will further Walmart’s pledge to fight hunger in America. As part of Walmart’s and the Walmart Foundation’s $2 billion commitment to fight hunger through 2015, Walmart stores in Maine donated approximately 4 million pounds of food, in fiscal year 2013, or the equivalent of 3.3 million meals. Additionally, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation gave more than $7.8 million in fiscal year 2013 in Maine alone.  For more information on Walmart’s fight against hunger, visit

More Store, More Jobs

The store employs approximately 200 full- and part-time associates, including approximately 80 positions created by the expansion. Store manager Jordan Codrey began his Walmart career in 2004 as an hourly deli associate.

“We are thrilled to be growing our presence in the Calais community,” Codrey said. “We would like to invite everyone to come and check out the expanded store and join in some fun events during our grand-opening celebration. We look forward to continuing to offer a great shopping experience along with everyday low prices.”

A Big Family Welcome

Walmart is happy to be part of the Calais community and is ready to celebrate with residents Saturday, Oct. 5. A Big Family Welcome will give customers a chance to meet Codrey and enjoy fun family activities such as face painting, cupcake decorating and free food samples while supplies last. Join the celebration from noon to 3 p.m.
