December Pops Concert

December is starting off right this year with the Calais Middle/High School December Pops Concert.  On December 4th at  p.m. the jazz combo, chorus, and concert band will take the stage to perform an eclectic mix of holiday music.  Not only will the band be performing, Mrs. Loper’s art students will be creating fantastic decorations for the stage.  This concert will be a showcase of all of the fine arts talent at Calais High School.  The jazz combo will start the night with some fun carols like “Up On the Housetop” and then switch gears to perform “Legend of Zelda: Lost Woods.”  This quirky piece is from a popular video game series and was specially arranged by jazz combo drummer Jackson Greenlaw for this concert.

The chorus recently started an after-school program for singers who could not fit the class into their schedule.  This has increased their numbers and given them a great full sound.  They’ll be playing four songs in the concert, including classic Christmas and Hannukah songs as well as the pop hit “Cups (When I’m Gone).”  Their final song will be “Feliz Navidad,” with a special introduction from Stephy Risso, a chorus member and a foreign exchange student from Chile.

The concert band will close the night with a varied selection of holiday songs.  They’ve taken inspiration from around the world from the melodies of the British Isles for “Celtic Air and Dance” to the spirit of France for “The City of Lights” to the drums of Africa for “African Bell Carol.”  They’ve also included classic carols such “White Christmas” and “Sleigh Ride” to get the audience humming along.

Make sure to mark your calendars for the December Pops Concert!  We hope to see you all there.
