Shiretowners Win with Second Half Surge

A veteran Calais Blue Devil squad comprised of 7-juniors and 5-seniors opened at home Saturday night against the visiting Shiretowners from Houlton. The Devils started the game playing tough defense while Niles, Johnson, Hold, and Diffen contributed on the offensive end giving the hosts a 13-8 edge after the first 8-minutes. Kyle Johnson hit 3-2’s in the second with Newell and Niles adding a 3-pointer each, but Houlton had a big 13-points from the standout junior Kyle Bouchard and the teams entered the lockers with the guests ahead 30-29.

The critical third had Houlton earning the edge off 10-points from senior Nick Guiod and a 6-point lead. The final stanza saw Calais and Houlton each earning just 2-baskets; the slight difference came on the free throw line as Houlton hit 11/16 and Calais 9/13 giving the county guests a narrow 61-53 victory. The Calais boys’ next home game will be Friday against Lincoln.
