Calais Wins Ganong Basketball Tournament

A talented and veteran Calais Lady Blue Devil basketball team opened at home on Thursday against the Lady Raiders from WA. A mix from six Calais players in the opening frame gave the hosts a 14-7 advantage after the opening eight. The Lady Raiders had a balance in the 2nd period knocking down 16, as they went to the lockers trailing by one, 23-24. Seven by Maddy McVicar in the third and a team total of 15 gave Calais a 3-point edge entering the last period, 39-36. After shooting less than 50% the entire game from the free throw stripe, Calais knocked down 6/8 in the last stanza, while WA was just 1/5, earning the Lady Blue Devils a narrow and exciting 49-47 win. Maddy McVicar led all scorers with 21-points, Kate Cundiff hit 10, and Paige Gillespie 8 in the win. The Raiders were paced by Tamara Kabuye at 14, Lauren Raye 8, and Logan Huckins 7.

The Woodland Dragons hosted the Shead Tigerettes in the home opener last week. The guests had a big 20-point opening frame led by Kristina Jamieson and Ieisha Mitchell with 6 & 7-points respectively. Freshman Lauren Cook helped Woodland second period sure with 7-points, as the teams broke at the half Shead 26 & Woodland 20. The Calais Lady Blue Devils played in the annual St. Stephen tournament over the weekend. It appeared the double elimination event might be over soon as Sussex took the opener 74-52, putting Calais in the loser’s bracket. Madison McVicar and Kate Cundiff paced the Lady Blue Devils with 10-each.

Against Fundy the Lady Devils powered to a 91-63 victory led by Maddy with 24, Kaylee Johnson 21, Felicia Moholland 12, Malorie Black 9, and 8-each from Olivia Smith and Kate Cundiff.

In their third contest against Southern Victoria the Calais club trailed by one after the opening period, but then powered back collecting an 85-68 win at the buzzer. Maddy McVicar led at 20, Malorie Black hit 13, Paige Gillespie 12, Kate Cundiff 11, Kaylee Johnson 9, and 8-each from Olivia Smith and Taylorae Carter.

This win put the Lady Devils in the championship game, facing Sussex again. This time it was a see-saw contest with Calais winning the opening frame and Sussex taking the second as they entered the lockers deadlocked at 28-28. The same thing happened in the final two periods, as the horn ended with the teams tied at 67, forcing overtime. Maddy McVicar poured in 18-points that half for Calais and Bridget Frazee had 14-point for Sussex. The 4-minute overtime was a thriller with Calais outscoring their Canadian guests 10-7, earning them a 77-74 win and the 2013 Ganong Tournament Championship.
