Local Young Musician Shares Her Story

By Amy Jeanroy

The Calais Advertiser  had a chance to sit down and talk with local up and coming singer Meghan Clark. Meghan is 14, and in 8th grade here in Calais. We caught up with her between classes, and had a chance to ask her some questions.

Meghan recently competed in  the Voice of DownEast Maine competition at University of Maine Machias, where she won the 13-19 age group. The experience was nerve wracking but not for the reasons one might think. Meghan recalls that night:

“I was so nervous because it took so long for my turn! Then it seemed to take forever for it to be over so we could hear who had won. It was really hard, and that was the first time that I had to compete against so many  other people.”

A self taught singer and guitar player, Meghan says she tried to take guitar lessons and it just didn’t work out.

“I went to one guitar lesson. I didn’t like it. If there is a chord that I don’t know, I just Google it to find out how to  play it. That’s why I would rather learn myself.“

She doesn’t take voice lessons just yet either. She does have a plan to start after the holiday break. About singing as a career, Meghan knew from a young age that she was on the right track.

“I have been singing all my life, but I knew that I was going to be a singer since I was 8. “

Meghan sings a range of music. She is just as powerful singing a Christmas classic as she is a song full of grown up emotion from Adele. When asked what types of music she likes to sing, Meghan couldn’t choose a single genre.

“I listen to different styles of music. I have been inspired by Demi Lavato for many years. But honestly no type of music is my favorite. I draw from each one.”

She hopes to go to a music school, and already has been thinking of her future plan.

“I have been looking at Berkeley, but I’m not sure yet. I do know that I am going to be a professional singer. I just know that I want to be an inspiration.

Meghan recently performed at the Robbinston Christmas tree lighting party, and is  going to be performing a benefit concert for the 8th Grade class trip. She  has some other performances in the works.

Meghan is the daughter of Matt and Dorie Clark of Calais.
