Matthew Foster Announces Candidacy for Washington and Hancock DA

ELLSWORTH, Maine – Matthew Foster is a Republican candidate for District Attorney for Washington and Hancock Counties.

Mr. Foster grew up in Ellsworth, Maine, the son of Barbarann Foster and Philip Foster.  His mother Barbarann was a school teacher for many years at the Winter Harbor Grammar School and later in Ellsworth and Bucksport.  His father Philip was an attorney in private practice in Ellsworth.   Mr. Foster attended Ellsworth High School and graduated in 1987 after which he enlisted as a Combat Paramedic in the 82nd Airborne Division of the United States Army and was honorably discharged.  Mr. Foster attended the University of Maine at Orono, and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology.  After that, he attended Suffolk University’s Sawyer School of Management and received a Masters Degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance and finally attended Suffolk University Law School, where he received his Juris Doctor.

Mr. Foster and his wife Melissa, currently live in Ellsworth with their two-year-old daughter Aislinn, and fourteen-year-old niece Aliza.  Mr. Foster settled in Ellsworth in the early 1970’s making Ellsworth his home ever since.  Mr. Foster met his wife, who was (literally) “the girl next door” after she moved to Ellsworth from Cherryfield to be closer to her work at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in the operating room.

Mr. Foster has practiced in Ellsworth as a criminal defense attorney, mostly representing indigent defendants for nearly eleven years.  Previously, to his work as an attorney, he worked for the Town of Bar Harbor as the Payroll Supervisor and Tax Collector, and prior to that worked as a Retirement Services Specialist in the securities field.  Mr. Foster’s practice is small and focuses on helping clients who might not otherwise be able to afford a lawyer in matters ranging from criminal defense, to divorce, to landlord/tenant issues.

Mr. Foster previously held elected office as an Ellsworth City Counselor from 2006 to 2009.  He did not seek re-election in order to run for District Attorney in 2010.  Mr. Foster was narrowly defeated in that election by the current District Attorney, who is not seeking re-election.  Mr. Foster has been active in the community and serves on the board of directors of the Stanwood Wildlife Sanctuary, a nature and wildlife preserve in Ellsworth and on the board of Squeaky Wheel Adventures, a not-for-profit organization that provides trips and activities for children in foster care.  Mr. Foster is also a member of the Anah Shrine, and has helped to raise many thousands of dollars over the years for the Shrine Hospitals which provide free care to children suffering from burns or congenital birth defects.

Mr. Foster believes that it is time for the District Attorney’s Office in Washington and Hancock Counties to have some new ideas, some fresh perspective, and a renewed sense of commitment to the community and to justice that has been lacking for some time.  He believes that our community has lost faith in this office, and that if given the chance, that he would bring the leadership, knowledge and experience necessary to put things back on track and provide our communities with the protections and service that they need and deserve.
