Bark for the Park Event

By Dan Northcutt

On Saturday May 31 Ganong Nature park in St. Stephen will host the first annual “Bark for the Park” event. The fundraiser hopes to raise at least $2,000 of the $15,000 needed to repair and improve one of the park’s most beautiful trails. The trail delves into the woods and commands a breathtaking view of the bay at its head. However, as a result of  damages from this winter’s ice storms and spring seasonal flooding the trail is in need of serious repair as well as anticipated upgrades like bridges that promise to make the unique trail more accessible to a wider range of park visitors, and of course, their dogs.

Scheduled events and proceedings include a 2 kilometer (1.2mi) sponsored dog walk, face painting, cash only vendors, photo booth with costumes by photographer Michelle McCray, contests with categories including an owner/pet look-alike and trick competition, demonstrations of canine agility and skill, et al. Charlotte County S.P.C.A. and Ca.R.Ma. will be present as part of the event and Ganong Nature Park’s commitment to community education. In addition there will be a “dog house” event on Friday May 30, local personalities will be placed in the dog house and patrons can register the name of someone they want picked up and placed in the dog house until bail can be posted; contact and details to follow. Registration forms and pledges are available in Calais at the Calais Veterinary Clinic on North St., in St. Stephen at Mayfield Veterinary Clinic on Happy Valley Ln. off Rte. 170, Money Saver on King St., and at Guardian Drugstore on King St. Or they can be downloaded at:
