WC:OC To Host 5K A La Mud Obstacle Challenge in May

MACHIAS, Maine -- As part of National Prevention Week, Washington County: One Community is hosting a 5K A La Mud Obstacle Challenge. The event will include a one mile family fun run.

The race will be held at the Downeast Fairgrounds on US Rt. 1 in Whitneyville on Sunday, May 18, and all proceeds will benefit the Downeast Teen Leadership Camp and WC:One Voice youth groups. Professional photographers will be on hand to catch participants “in all their mud-caked glory,” Dustin Foss at WC:OC said.

WC:OC is holding the 5K A La Mud to celebrate National Prevention Week, which is a national, annual observance sponsored by the federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.  WC:OC hopes to provide a fun, family-friendly activity for Washington County residents while providing helpful information about how to promote good mental health and substance-free lifestyles for every member of our community.

Although individuals are welcome, Foss is encouraging teams to sign up. Registration fees are $10 for the 5K challenge; teams of 2-10 are $8 per person and the one-mile fun run is a minimum $5 fee. Registrations will receive a Dirty a la Mud drawstring backpack, and other gifts.

Mud check-in will begin at 11:30 a.m., the one mile will begin at 1 p.m. and the 5K will be a staggered start, beginning at 1:30 p.m. Registration will close at 2 p.m. May 16 and there will be no opportunity to register on race day. Participants will need to bring a valid ID with them to check-in.  Young people ages 13-17 can participate in the full obstacle challenge with a parent/guardian’s permission and a signed waiver, and all ages are welcome to participate in the one mile fun run, again with permission and waiver signed by those underage. Rinse stations will be provided following the challenge.

Volunteers are needed for the event and anyone interested can contact WC:OC at 255.3741 or email afochesato@wc-oc.org or twoodruff@wc-oc.org. Volunteers are needed at the check in stand, check gear stand and throughout the course. Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older.
