The Dragon’s Den

Camille Howard

Welcome back to the Dragon’s Den. We’ve had a full week at Woodland Jr. Sr. High School, so let’s jump right in.

The softball and baseball seasons are in full swing. Both teams have about two games a week, traveling to schools and hosting teams on the home turf. Last week, the softball team played both Machias and Naraguagus, and unfortunately lost to both teams. The baseball team played the same two schools, and were victorious against Machias high school, with a score of 11-1. They were defeated in their game against Naraguagus. Best of luck with the rest of your season, softball and baseball players!!

On Tuesday, the arts department at WHS held their annual Spring Arts show. Projects by the visual arts department, including studio art, photoshop, and photojournalism classes, were on display. The band and chorus played a variety of musical selections from a number of genres, including pop, rock, and traditional spirituals. Senior soloists Alyssa Campbell and Scott Rhoades performed in the song “Wade in the Water.” Outgoing seniors were given a heartfelt farewell. We wish Scott Boies, Scott Rhoades, Alyssa Campbell, Kim Morrisay, Vanessa Kidder, Andrew Howland, and Weston Ranalli the best of luck as they leave high school. We were pleased to invite the members of the alumni band to the stage for a performance of “Old Time Rock and Roll”. The concert was a success, thanks to all the students for their hard work and preparation, and to all the community members who came out and supported the arts.

Speaking of the arts, the Tri-M music honors society would like to invite community members to their Ice Cream Social, which will be held on May 30th in the band room at WHS. There will be musical selections prepared by the Tri-M students, a performance on their brand new PVC instrument, and, of course, ice cream. This event is open to the public, so if you’d like an evening of entertainment, feel free to come!

Finally, on Saturday the annual Junior/Senior Prom was held! Students got dressed in their best attire for a night of dancing and photo ops. Seniors, juniors, and their marching partners attended the public march in, followed by dinner and a dance at the Calais motor in. It was a great and fun night for all who participated, and it reminded many seniors that graduation is just around the corner.

That’s all the news from WHS this week. Come back next week for more exciting news from the home of the Dragons! Thanks for checking in.
