Maine’s Credit Unions Make Donation To Meals On Wheels In Honor Of National Older Awareness Month

Recently, in recognition of May being National Older Americans Month in Maine and nationwide, Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger presented five checks for $300 each to the Agencies on Aging Meals on Wheels programs. The presentation took place at the Spectrum Generations Hallowell location, where the funds were presented to a representative from each agency before the food delivery vans left to make the day’s visits.

The five area agencies on aging in Maine are: Southern Maine Area Agency on Aging, which serves Cumberland and York counties; Aroostook Area Agency on Aging, which serves Aroostook County; Eastern Area Agency on Aging, which serves Hancock, Penobscot, Piscataquis and Washington Counties; SeniorsPlus, which provides services to seniors in Androscoggin, Franklin and Oxford Counties; and Spectrum Generations, which serves Kennebec, Knox, Lincoln, Sagadahoc, Somerset and Waldo Counties.

“This donation helps meet a need that is not felt just this month, but throughout the year,” Jon Paradise, Vice President of Governmental & Public Affairs for the Maine Credit Union League, explained.  “With more than five percent of seniors in our state experiencing food insecurity, Maine ranks seventeenth in the nation, and first in New England in terms of senior food insecurity.  This is truly a problem that demands our attention every day of the year.”

Historically, Older Americans Month has been a time to acknowledge the contributions of past and current older persons to our country. Each May, Older Americans Month is celebrated across the country through ceremonies, events, fairs and other such activities.

Each year, nearly all of Maine’s credit unions participate in the Maine Credit Unions' Campaign for Ending Hunger.  Since 1990, when this collective effort began, Maine's credit unions have raised and distributed $5.3 million to help end hunger in Maine.
