Outdoor Hikes, Paddles and Volunteer Opportunities You Can Join

Downeast Maine is known for its outdoor recreational opportunities.  Summer is primetime to get out and enjoy all that our area has to offer.  Downeast Coastal Conservancy (DCC) holds a variety of events, hikes, paddles and volunteer days throughout the year that are available for anyone to join.  DCC’s event calendar kicks into high gear during the summer months with events every week.  Visit DCC’s website at www.DowneastCoastalConservancy.org or stop by the DCC Office in the old 5&10 in Machias to see the full calendar.

Upcoming events include the trail opening at the historic St. Regis Pasture overlooking the Middle River.  This property was acquired by DCC as part of the Two Rivers Conservation Area.  The trail opening hike will be Friday, June 13 at 7pm, please meet at the Sunrise Trail Kiosk on Kilton Lane in Machias, across from Helen’s Restaurant.  The Machias River Heritage Trail, also part of the Two Rivers Conservation Area, will open with a hike on Sunday, June 22 at 2pm. Meet at the trailhead parking area, located on Route 1A in Machias, about ½ mile south of Down East Community Hospital.  Black flies, mosquitoes and ticks enjoy these properties too, please dress appropriately and/or bring your preferred repellant.

Volunteers are needed for two upcoming workdays.  Volunteer days are a great chance to help DCC with the stewardship of area properties while enjoying the scenic beauty of these treasured places.  Join DCC on Thursday, June 18 at 9am at Reversing Falls in Pembroke to help with light trail work, we’ll be clipping branches and clearing brush.  Please bring your own work gloves, water and snack, feel free to bring your own clippers or bow saw.    Meet at the Reversing Falls Parking area at the end of Reversing Falls Road in Pembroke.

On Saturday, June 28, DCC will partner with the Maine Island Trail Association (MITA) for an island cleanup in South Addison including DCC’s Tibbett Island Preserve.  “Island cleanups are one of my favorite volunteer activities,” said DCC Assistant Director Becky Lee. “It’s a chance to spend the day at the ocean with a purpose and an opportunity to explore places few people go.”  The cleanup will start at 9am, arrange your own transportation to Tibbett Island, or contact Maria MITA at 207-761-8225 to reserve a spot in one of their boats.  Please bring your own sunscreen, water, snack, personal floating device and work gloves.

July will start with a Bring Your Own Boat Paddle on the Middle River in Machias.  The Middle River offers beautiful, flat water paddling in the heart of Machias.  Please contact DCC if you have questions about any of the events listed or if you want to learn more about other events at 207-255-4500, e-mail info@DowneastCoastalConservancy.org or go to www.DowneastCoastalConservancy.org
