Calais High School

Dominic Gayton

Welcome back to the Busy Halls of CHS. This week Calais High School groups are preparing for annual events, putting together and participating in new events, getting the Class of 2015’s yearbook ready, and honoring one teacher’s accomplishments. Let’s jump in to this week’s news.

The Student Council is always busy, but these first weeks of school are always their busiest. Right now, the Student Council is preparing to go off to the 2014 Maine Association of Student Councils Annual Conference at Camp Kieve in Nobleboro, Maine on October 20 and 21. Calais High School’s Student Council must prepare name tags and a banner to compete against other schools at the conference. On top of this, Calais High School and Calais Middle School together occupy 4 out of 8 seats on the MASC Executive Board; Dominic Gayton is President, Mayez Travis is President-elect, John LaPointe is Eastern Region President, and Mackenzie LaPointe is Junior High Representative. In addition to helping their own council win events, these students will play a vital role in the execution of the conference. This conference will be a great educational experience for all attendees, not withstanding Calais High School students.

The Student Council is also working on putting together their second Meet the Candidates Night for School Committee. More news, including date and time, the name of the moderator(s), and the participating candidates will be available in the next week.

On October 8 and 9, JMG School-to-Work and Career Prep students attended the LEC overnight trip. This included many leadership and career search related activities, and was a great experience for those who attended.

On October 31, the Calais High School Band will be performing in the Halloween Parade at the Calais Free Library. If you were near the high school last week you may have been lucky enough to see us practicing our performance and marching outside. Please don’t spoil the surprise set list for others in the community.

On November 10, the Calais High School AP English Lit class will be hosting its annual Veterans’ Day Assembly. If you have photos that you would like to be placed in a video to be played at this assembly, please contact the school, Mrs. Ellis, or Perry Amos. All photos must be in by Friday, October 24.

The Yearbook Committee is putting together the Class of 2015s Yearbook and needs the communities help. If you are a business owner and would like to purchase an ad, please contact a member of the Yearbook Committee or a student in the Class of 2015 for more details.

The Calais High School Chapter of National Honor Society is currently planning a special event to be held at the end of next month, with the help of the Student Council. More details to come.

Finally, Calais High School and St. Croix Regional Technical Center is proud to announce that our own Building Trades instructor and Academic Decathlon coach, Mr. Sluzenski, is the recipient of the Maine Administrators of Career and Technical Education CTE Teacher of the Year Award. Congratulations, Mr. Sluzenski.

Until next week, thanks for reading.
