Cathance Winter Fest

Cabin Fever Cure with all-day events in Cooper on Saturday, February 14, 2015

The Cathance Lake Association is celebrating Valentine’s Day in a big way with all-day events: an ice fishing derby on Cathance Lake until 4:00 pm; a poker ride with participants picking up cards at designated stations in the area, a “souper supper” and a dance with live music by John Viselli, Alan Cook, and more.

This fund raiser would enable the Cathance Lake Association (CLA) to build loon nesting platforms.  Loons are in desperate circumstances throughout Maine, and these platforms would offer some protection from predation by animals and interference by human activation.  The CLA is dedicated to preserve, protect, respect Cathance Lake and to keep the lake as healthy as possible through such ongoing programs as boat inspections for invasive plants and animals, education for boat owners and lakeshore residents on how to care for the lake and its wildlife, working with marine biologists to test for oxygen levels, bio-pollutants, etc.  The CLA’s efforts of many years have made Cathance Lake one of the five most pristine lakes among the more than 6,000 lakes and ponds in the State of Maine.

At the public benefit “souper supper” at the Cooper Community Center is from 5:00 – 7:00 pm which will feature four heart-warming entrées featuring fish chowder, chili, vegetable soup, and chicken soup as well as breadsticks, salads, beverages, and dessert; a 50-50; Chinese auction; raffle; activities for kids, and presentations.  There will be an award ceremony for winners of the ice fishing derby and poker ride at 7:00 pm. Attendance is not required to win.

Register for the ice fishing derby between 8am and noon on Saturday at the Cooper Community Center or pre-register online at our Facebook page “Cathance Winter Fest” or request forms via email at kathleen.hull7@gmail.com.  Fee to register for ages 14 and above is $5.00 and payment must be received by noon on the day of the event, free for ages 13 and under.

In addition to funding building loon nests on Cathance Lake, some proceeds will be going to the Cooper Volunteer Fire Department for much-needed equipment and to the Cathance Grange #510 for kitchen upgrades in the Cooper Community Center.
