With a football program no longer part of the Calais or Woodland school systems, youth who wish to play often join non-school teams in St. Stephen, traveling to various locations throughout New Brunswick.  Now, to help prepare those football enthusiasts for the game even more, a football camp is being offered in Washington County.

According to Mike Karnas, Head Coach of The Lion of Judah Football Camp, boys ages 8 to 15 are invited to take part in a five day camp this summer.  Set for June 22nd to June 26th in Cutler, this is the second year the camp has been offered in the area, although the camp has been in existence for seven years.

"The Lion of Judah Football Camp is the only full contact--tackle American football--camp in Maine and possibly in all of New England," Karnas said.  "The camp format is as old as the sport itself, dating back to the early YMCA movement in the 19th century combining athletic activity with instruction in God's word.  We do preach the gospel of life through Jesus Christ.  Think of it as football vacation Bible school," he explained.

There will be two camps held this summer, one in Cutler, just outside of Machias, and one in Orrington, just outside of Bangor.  All the equipment is provided to the campers, with the exception of cleats, and the only other required items campers need to bring are a lunch, at least two snacks, plenty of water to drink, and swimming trunks.

The camp begins at 8:00 a.m. and ends at 5:00 p.m.  "The morning is used for preparation and instruction, and after swimming, the teams get to play football," Karnas said.  "One of the very unique aspects of this camp is that the players get to use what they have learned in the camp during games everyday."  Karnas also said that the field used is perfect for football and its size allows for two youth games simultaneously.

Boys meeting the age requirements from Maine or New Brunswick and beyond are welcomed to take part.  Parents and guardians can register their player online at or by calling Coach Mike Karnas at 207-478-2758.  The cost for The Lion of Judah Football Camp in Cutler is $30 for the week.
