Ivie Avery Retires With 47 Years of Service

Ivie Avery, Radiology Secretary, retired June 5 after 47 years at CRH.   Ivie was the most senior employee at Calais Regional Hospital for many years.

Ivie is the daughter of Gates and Fern Johnson.  She grew up in Perry with three brothers, Loring, a retired customs officer living in Fort Fairfield, ME; Dr. Dana Johnson, a dentist at the Health Clinic at Peter Dana Point, Princeton; and Robert, retired military living in AZ.  She has five nephews and one niece, Zachary, Scott, Isaac, Jason, Cyrus and Bella.   Ivie’s dad passed away in 2013. Her mom, a lifelong resident of Perry, is now a resident of Marshall Healthcare Facility in Machias.

Ivie attended Clark Consolidated School in Perry and graduated from Shead Memorial High School in Eastport in 1966.  She earned an Associate in Business Science Degree as a Medical Secretary from Husson College in Bangor in 1968.  Ivie worked while in college for a Physician in Bangor typing medical reports and documents.  While in college she was a member of the Delta Sigma Delta sorority and the Future Secretary’s Association.  Two days after college graduation Ivie joined the CRH Radiology Department.  That was 47 years ago.

Her responsibilities over the years, in addition to Radiology, have included clerk-typist for the former library and for clinics.  She has worked for four Directors over nearly five decades.

Ivie was married for 39 years to husband, (Kenneth) Sonny Avery, who passed away in 2007.  They spent their married life in her hometown of Perry, except for a couple of exciting vacations to Italy and other destinations.

Ivie will be remembered for her long service record to CRH and as the go to individual in Radiology with the historical background and answers to inquiries made.

Her plans in retirement include traveling, sewing, knitting, and spending time with friends and  family including her neighbors, Riley, 13 and Wren, 11 of whom she is especially fond of.   Congratulations to Ivie.
