By Jayna Smith

Under leadership of Craig Morrison, appointed just this year as Recreation Director, the Calais Recreation Department is a vital asset to community.  With programs offered throughout the year to people of all ages, one main attraction is the city's Howard Fox Memorial Pool.  This year's pool staff of seven is gearing up to open on schedule again, like last year, after a delay in opening two years ago due to its notorious leak.

Howard Fox Memorial Pool certainly has and continues to be utilized by many in the community.  Open seven days a week from 1:00 to 4:30, many enjoy public swim for just $1 for kids and $2 for adults each day for residents, or $2 for kids and $4 for adults for non-residents. Public swim is also offered evenings from 5:00 to 7:00 Monday through Thursday.  Pool passes for individuals and for families can be purchased when the pool is open for public swim.

Also popular at the pool are swim lessons which are open to the public and to the recreation department's day campers in the mornings Monday to Friday.  Levels of instruction and classes range from water exploration and primary skill to advanced skills and guard start.
