Calais Police Reminds Community To Lock Vehicles

 By Jayna Smith

After investigating a rash of recent vehicle break-ins, Calais Police Department once again reminds the community to lock any unattended vehicles.  According to Sergeant Matt Vinson, the first of the recent break-ins was reported Tuesday morning, July 7th after items and money were stolen from an unlocked vehicle parked at a Mahar Street residence.

The reports continued throughout the week with items being stolen overnight from vehicles at Washington Street, Calais Avenue, and Downes Street residences.  All of the vehicles were unlocked.  As well, reports of car alarms being activated have come from residents in the vicinity of Palmer Street.

Sergeant Vinson urges people to keep their vehicles, garages, and houses locked, and leave no valuables in plain sight.  “These are crimes of opportunity.  If the opportunity isn't there, the crimes won't be committed,” he said.

The police continue to investigate these crimes and ask that anyone with information contact the department at 454-2751 or use the tip line at 454-8730 to remain anonymous.  “If you have information or think you have information that might be pertinent, please call us,” Sergeant Vinson stated.
