Winners of the 2016 Maine Governor’s Conference on Tourism Awards were announced during the annual conference held at Sunday River Resort in Newry, Maine, on March 22, 2016.

The 2016 Award for Innovation and Creativity was presented to the Eastport Pirate Festival.

“For the past ten years, the Eastport Pirate Festival has drawn thousands of visitors to the Eastport area each September, helping to extend the visitor season into the fall. By using the Downeast region’s storied past as a smugglers haven to connect to a popular interest in pirates, the organizers have tapped into today’s travel and tourism trends, creating an entertaining, immersive Maine travel experience," said Carolann Ouellette, Director of the Maine Office of Tourism.

The Governor’s Conference on Tourism Awards recognize individuals, businesses and organizations that have distinguished themselves as models for the industry and contributing to the overall growth of tourism in Maine.
