April is behind us as we quickly approach the end of the school year. The week before April break was a fun-filled week. Ms. Tonya and her staff treated everyone to an ice cream Sunday after lunch one day. We also held our annual Jump Rope for Heart event on Thursday afternoon. Our 1st place jumper was Roger (Rez) Sockabasin with Evan Gillespie and Muwin Dana in a tie for 2nd, and Trinity Smith in 3rd place. Our top money collectors were Lewey Harnois with $210, Genesis Sabattus with $151, Simiah Lozada with $141.67, and Maddy Nicholas with $107. The 5th grade class collectively raised $711.77, the highest total for a classroom. The grand total raised for the American Heart Association was $2,358.50! Congratulations to all who participated in this worthy cause.

The week following vacation brought the return of our Passamaquoddy teacher, Brenda Lozada, who we had been missing while she recovered from surgery. Here is a big welcome back Ms. Brenda! We missed you!

The 7th and 8th grade students traveled to the Maine Maritime Academy through the Gear Up program last week. Students were given a chance to tour the school and talk with the students there. It was reported to be a trip worthwhile.

The After School Program began its last session of the school year on Monday. Children had choices of activities like; softball, playground games, fishing, exploring nature, and t-ball. Each activity was chosen to teach a skill, and has an academic component, but all the kids know is that they are having fun. Parents, please encourage your children to stay for the After School Program.

There are lots of upcoming events this month. The week of May 2 – May 6 is community clean-up days in observation of Earth Day. Each class will go outside armed with rubber gloves and trash bags and clean up a section of Peter Dana Point during their Passamaquoddy language class time. The kids are taught the importance of taking care of Mother Earth because of all she provides for us.

On May 9, a dance group, and 5 student artists will travel to Bar Harbor for the Student Art Show at the Abbe Museum.

On May 20, grade 7 will travel to Machias to visit the site of the petroglyphs.

On May 26, grade 3 will travel to the Down East Bird Festival.

Still in the planning stages, fiddlehead harvesting for grade 4 and picking flag root for grade 5 dates will be announced soon.
