St. Croix Valley Relay to Meet Fundraising Goal

The Relay For Life of St. Croix Valley is expected to meet its fundraising goal for 2016. “…As of right now, we’ve raised $20,921,” announced Marianne Moore at Saturday night’s closing ceremonies. Moore, who is the event’s local Planning Committee Chairperson, said that funds would continue to trickle in over the next few days and weeks. Economic hardships have challenged non-profits like the Relay For Life in recent years, but both of Washington County’s Relays were among the handful of main events meeting their fundraising goals this year.

Cancer fighters walked the Relay from noon until midnight to raise funds and to show support for the American Cancer Society. This was the second year the St. Croix Valley event was held in downtown Calais, where it’s easier for downtown businesses to participate and to benefit from the downtown activity.

Calais Regional Hospital’s team raised the most money for the year: $3400.00. Runners-up Alexander 4 a Cure raised $3,231, and the Calais Blue Devils team ‘Surf the Purple Wave’ raised $2,624.

‘Rising Star’ recognition was awarded to the following teams this year: Rotary For Life, Queens for a Cure, the Life Savers, Curves of Calais, Eddie’s Angels, and the Pembroke Rowdies. A special ‘Rising Star’ recognition went to Rick’s Can and Bottle, the local recycling company who raised $1536.05 for the event, even though they did not officially have a team.

The leading individual fundraiser was Calais Regional Hospital team member Anna Lozier, who raised two thousand dollars for the event.  Runners up were daughter and mother cancer fighters Lesliann Barnard, who raised $1,409.00 and B. J Wallace who raised $586.00.

Celebratory events and fundraisers throughout the evening included a rocking performance by “Saturday Night Rock Band,” comedian Brian Giles, and keyboardist Forest Maffei.
