Youth in the Calais area with an interest in basketball will have the opportunity to train with an enthusiastic and supportive coach in the coming weeks. Ben Teer—recognized widely for his skill in playing and in coaching—will be hosting a two-day camp on August 13th and 14th at Calais High School. Students who will be entering grades 5 through 12 are encouraged to come.

“I really like how Ben works with kids,” Outdoor Adventure Center Director Ben Collins said. The OAC, which is part of Washington County Community College, organized the camp in an effort to provide area youth with a dynamic and exciting basketball experience. Collins said that Teer has worked with his own kids and it has always been positive and enlightening for them.

Teer is a native of the Machias area, and he remains the only player at Washington Academy to have scored 1,000 points during his career there. In 2010, he helped WA to earn the state championship. After high school, he went on to play at Tier 1 and Tier II schools as a result of investing himself fully into learning the best practices and secrets of the game. He has since played against several NBA players including Jared Sullinger, Evan Turner, Aaron Craft, Tre Burke, Nik Stauskas, Phil Pressey, Loul Deng, Andrew Wiggins, Andre Drummond, Mitch McGary, and many more. Since an injury left him unable to pursue his own basketball career, Teer has devoted himself to teaching younger players who aspire to be the best players they can be.

The camp is designed for any skill level. “We want to reach anyone that has a passion for the game regardless of how much skill they have,” Collins said. “Coach Teer is very good with kids at all different levels of ability.”

There is a $25 fee for the camp, which Collins notes is half what Teer usually charges for his camps. The camp will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on August 13th and 14th. To sign up, contact Ben Collins at 454-1062 or Nichole Cote at 454-1012.
