Back in June Sunrise Eye Care in Calais welcomed new doctor Jennifer Kehrer to their staff as a full time Optometrist.

Dr. Kehrer is a graduate of Northern Michigan University where she earned her undergraduate degree and MCPHS University where she obtained her degree in optometry. Dr. Kehrer got interested in optometry when attending her sister’s eye appointments as a young child.

“My husband and I moved from the upper peninsula of Michigan so it’s a similar area,” Dr. Kehrer said of moving to Calais. “So far it’s been great. Everyone is so warm and friendly.”

Dr. Kehrer loves working with kids but is now accepting patients of all ages at both the Calais and Machias offices of Sunrise Eye Care.

“It’s very rewarding to help people see. I feel like its one of those things that people don’t really think about until they can’t. Especially for kids who might not even know that they really can’t see well, it’s very rewarding.”

When she isn’t working Dr. Kehrer is out exploring her new home with her husband and playing with their new puppy.

It is important to take good care of your eyes because they can be indicators of more than just eye health but your overall health as well. Eye exams can indicate issues like high blood pressure and it’s recommended that you receive an eye exam every year. Dr. Kehrer recommends that kids see an eye doctor at age three and then age five and every year after that.

“We just hope to set up roots in a community that we can be part of and so far it’s been all of that,” Kehrer said. Stop by Sunrise Eye Care in Calais or Machias and welcome Dr. Kehrer and set up your next eye appointment.
