The major event for this week was the annual Friends of Princeton Tree Lighting at Legacy Square on Saturday. This was the fifth year of this special celebration and one of the Friends favorite activities. First a thank you to all our volunteer cookie bakers who responded to our calls. Every year they come through for us with a wonderful assortment of homemade cookies. We had enough to make 145 bags with 4 cookies each. Next thanks to Doug Clements for putting the lights on the tree last Monday. He had to keep adding new strings to deal with the new growth this year. Then, Fire Chief Tony Ramsdell and his wife Tiffany, had the fire station open early and moved out the trucks and helped us set up. Parks and Recreation’s, Jessica Cilley decorated Santa Claus’s corner. The fun started when our families began arriving at Legacy Square. At 6:00 p.m. sharp, after the tree was lighted, Ernest Carle led both members of the Sunrise Christian Church and the Princeton Baptist Church in singing traditional Christmas carols. Then everyone came to the new Princeton Fire Station to have cocoa (made and served by Friends Sue Storey, daughter Nicole and Keith Damon) and cookies (passed out by Friends, Nancy Davies) and received a Christmas decoration (donated every year by Friends, Deb Mann). The fire department’s Warren Valentino became Santa Claus and passed out candy canes (donated by the fire department). He said he talked to twice as many children as last year and enjoyed it so much. Jessica took some terrific photographs which she gave us permission to use and were put on the Friends Facebook page as well. When all I read about is the decline of small rural towns in Maine, we can be proud of the Princeton community groups who worked with Friends of Princeton to make this event so successful. Well over 100 families came to this tree lighting and the big smiles and happy atmosphere made for a great start to our Christmas season. We are already looking forward to some great outside decorating this year for entry into Friends first Christmas Holiday Home Decorating Contest.
