Winter Kids Workshops for Educators in February

On February 8 and 9, 2017, Healthy Acadia will sponsor free WinterKids workshops for teachers and childcare providers aimed at helping educators keep kids active with outdoor physical activity throughout the winter. WinterKids empowers teachers in the most remote areas of Maine to get their students outside, active and engaged in learning using lessons from the WinterKids Guide to Outdoor Active Learning (GOAL).

The WinterKids Guide to Outdoor Active Learning (GOAL) includes lessons and activities that make it easy for preschool and elementary teachers to integrate fun, outdoor activity into their winter lessons — all while meeting education standards. The 1.5-hour workshop, facilitated by WinterKids Program Director Marion Doyle, will provide an overview of the GOAL curriculum and opportunities for students to experience fun outdoor winter activities throughout Maine.

WinterKids training workshops for teachers will be held from 3:00pm to 4:30pm on Wednesday, February 8 at Calais Elementary School, 53 Garfield Street, Calais and Thursday, February 9 at Machias Memorial High School, 1 Bulldog Lane, Machias.  A workshop for childcare providers will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 8 at Lots of Tots Child Care, 162 Main Street, Princeton and Thursday, February 9  at Machias Memorial High School, 1 Bulldog Lane, Machias. Advance registration is required.

These WinterKids workshops are offered by Healthy Acadia and Let’s Go! 5-2-1-0 Downeast with support from WinterKids and Let’s Go! 5-2-1-0. Let’s Go! 5-2-1-0 incorporates evidence-based strategies for preventing obesity with a focus on the importance of establishing healthy habits beginning in childhood.  Let’s Go! promotes the daily 5-2-1-0 message: 5 or more fruits and vegetables; 2 hours or less of recreational screen time; 1 hour or more of physical activity; and 0 sugar-sweetened beverages. Let’s Go! 5-2-1-0 Downeast is a partnership between Healthy Acadia, Blue Hill Memorial Hospital, Down East Community Hospital, Maine Coast Memorial Hospital, and Mount Desert Island Hospital to offer Let’s Go! 5-2-1-0 program and learning opportunities in Hancock and Washington counties. WinterKids helps children develop healthy lifelong habits through fun, outdoor winter activity. Their vision is that all children are healthy and fit because they are outside and active in the winter, and year-round.
