Robert O. Brown, 74, of Indian Lake in Whiting, ME, passed away peacefully at home on January 12, 2017.

Born in Milford, MA, he was the son of the late Charles F. Brown and Cecile E. (Mailloux) Brown.

Educated in Westborough, MA grammar schools, he graduated from St. Mary’s CCHS in 1960 and Worcester State College in 1964, where he earned a BS in Education, certified in English and History. He taught in central MA schools before enlisting in the USAF.  Captain Brown served in San Antonio, TX, as an Education and Training Officer, Squadron Commander and Group Staff Officer.  He set up the Basic Military School Remedial Reading Program and organized the Critique of Training Program.

He earned a Master of Speech Pathology from UCONN in 1974. Rob taught in the Kolburne School in the Berkshires, MA, where he developed, implemented and coordinated a Speech, Language Screening and Hearing Program. He also developed and supervised a Speech Aide Program there.  Parents and administrators praised his ability to “reach and motivate their children” while Guidance Counselors commented on his “amazing ability to assist children with emotional problems.”

Rob moved to Maine in 1978 and loved his work in the Union, Princeton and Woodland Schools, using his clinical skills to help children overcome speech disabilities. He wore silly ties and created an incentive system called Brown’s Bucks.  Children could spend their “earnings” on small items from his Toy Box.  In later years he specialized in Speech Therapy with young children on the Autism Spectrum.

Rob was designated as Washington County, Maine’s, SPED Directors’  Therapist of the Year, 2000-2001. After retiring from the State of Maine in 2012 he worked for Child Development Services and marveled that he had met so many wonderful families and that his 40-year career had brought him so much pleasure.

Rob appreciated the beauty of the natural world, especially along the shores on Indian Lake. His love of Wild Maine prompted many lake and ocean kayaking trips, hiking, cross country skiing and daily jogs. He snorkeled in St John’s Cinnamon Bay, BVI, hiked and kayaked in Alaska, climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro in his 60’s and hiked Machu Picchu in his 70’s. It was his joy to share these times with family members and his friend, Marianne Moore.

Rob was predeceased by his daughter, Diana Lea Brown, his parents, many aunts and uncles and two of 17 Brown family cousins.

He is survived by his four siblings, Francis C. Brown and his wife, Nancy, of South Dennis, MA, Paul D. Brown of Richmond, MA,  and his partner, Ms. Kyle Harvey, Kathleen L. Smith and her husband, Ralph, of Cheshire, MA,  and Mary C. Gonzales and her husband, Jose, of New Albany, IN.

Rob is also survived by many nieces and nephews, great and great-great as well. They loved “Uncle Bobby” for his lively personality, readiness to play and enthusiastic interest in their activities.

He will be greatly missed by loving friends and by Corey Ayre, Matthew Ayre and Webster Case. He treasured the precious time spent in their company.

A celebration of Rob’s life will take place at a Memorial Mass at St. Luke the Evangelist Church, 90 W. Main Street, Westborough, MA on Saturday, June 24, 2017, at 10:30 AM. Callers may greet the family beginning at 10 AM in the church vestibule.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Rob’s name to the Westborough Public Library, 55 W. Main Street, Westborough, MA, 01581 or the Woodland Elementary School Library, 23 Fourth Street, Baileyville, ME, 04694.
