Sophomore Drew Hayward Paces 64-62 Victory

The Woodland Dragons finished their regular season in 8TH place sporting a 9-7 record and were seeded against the Fort Kent Warriors in 9TH place and ending their regular play at 10-8. In the MPA heal points the two teams had just a 0.12 difference in their tournament index, and during the regular season the two teams met first at Fort Kent where the Dragons pulled off a 60-55-overtime victory. Towards the end of January Calais hosted the Warriors and earned a thrilling 52-51 win on the buzzer, so according to the rating methods there weren’t two in Northern Class C that were a closer match. By having a tenth-point advantage in the tournament index Woodland hosted the county Warriors for their third encounter on the season in what was to prove another great contest.

Drew Hayward opened the first period with a hot hand penetrating the paint for strong shots inside and then nailing a 3-pointer at the end producing 11-points, while Sabre Phelps added two goals for 4-points giving the Dragons a 15-13 lead after the opening eight. The Warriors were paced by sophomore standout Caleb Delisle who hit two 3’s and made 2-free-throws.

Delisle continued the attack into the second frame as he nailed 3-3’s and a 2 for 11-points allowing Fort Kent to enter the lockers sporting a narrow 32-29 advantage. Drew hit 8-points with 2-3’s and Gavin Gardner added a 3-points in closing out 16-minutes of action.

The third frame belonged to the Dragons as their defense was tough holding the guests to just 4-points while 4-players connected on 5-3’s, Russell (2), Plissey, Gardner, and Moody, as the Warriors focused on defending Hayward. Woodland closed the third-eight with a substantial 48-36 lead.

The Warriors never quit and opened the final stanza with a couple threes, then five-players combined to add 20 more points to earn back the lead toward the end of the game. The Dragons tied the contest up in the final minute of action, and Riley Russell made two free throws with 16-seconds left to lift the Dragons to a 64-62 prelim victory at home.

Drew Hayward powered the critical victory that earned the Dragons a slot in the Northern Class C Regionals at the Cross Center by scoring 25-points with 4-assists. Seniors Kalob Moody (6-6 free throws) and Riley Russell hit 11-points-each, Gavin Gardner added 6-points, and Matt Miller made 4-critical free throws and pulled in 7-rebounds.

The 8th seed victory will pit the Dragons against the #1 seeded 18-0 George Stevens Academy on Tuesday night at 8:35 at the Cross Center in Bangor. That game winner will play a semi-final on Friday at 3:35. Everyone wishes the Dragons the very Best of Luck!
