Lady Blue Devils Battle Tough

Lose Quarterfinal to #2 Rated GSA 49-40

A small but talented Lady Blue Devil squad entered the quarterfinals in the Class C Northern division seeded 7th and paired with the #2 rated 16-2 George Stevens Academy who had their only losses to Piscataquis and the Class B Ellsworth Eagles. This is a big team that has been powered by 6’ senior Morgan Dauk and included junior Mazie Smallidge at 5’11.”

In the opening 8-minutes Dauk did pace her Eagles with 10-points, 8-rebounds and 2-steals, while Calais had Sydney Farrar with 4-points and 2-each from Bacon and Huckins to end the frame 17-9.

Good balance in the second period earned Calais 9-points, while tough defense with 5-steals brought the guests back to a 23-18 deficit at the halftime. Dauk was the lone scorer for the Eagles in that frame with 6-points.

The Lady Blue Devils had 7-turnovers in the first half compared to 9-Eagle turnovers, but the hosts out-rebounded Calais 21-8 and shot from the floor 48% compared to 35% for Calais.

The tenacious Lady Blue Devils never quit and at the 1:50 mark of the third period Olivia Huckins scored again to tie the contest at 32-32. Then the two teams played the balance of three with Calais securing a lead 36-34, as Calais poured in 16-points, paced by Lauren Cook with 10 points.

Starting the fourth, the Blue Devils hit a cold spot being held to just 6 points, while Dauk began taking over the contest with tough defense, rebounding, while scoring 11 points the Eagles were able to power to a 49-40 victory and a slot in the Friday semi-finals.

The Blue Devils will fight nose to nose with any team, but the big size difference proved to be the determining factor in the GSA win as they nearly doubled Calais’ rebounding, pulling in 35 to 18. Morgan Dauk was everything to the hosts as she poured in 31-points and brought down 15 rebounds and grabbed 4-steals in the quarterfinal win. The Eagles outshot Calais on the floor 51% to 44%, but solid defense permitted GSA only 3-attempts on the bonus stripe. Lauren Cook paced the Lady Blue Devils from the floor scoring 13-points and took 4-rebounds, Sydney Farrar scored 8 with 3-steals, Olivia Huckins tallied 8 had 4-steals, and 4-rebounds. Senior veteran Faith Tirrell scored 5 with 3 steals, and 3 rebounds, and senior Tianna Bacon scored 4, with 3 rebounds and a steal.

Congratulations to the Lady Blue Devils for a fine season and quality tourney experience!
