Lady Dragons End Season in Bangor

The Woodland Dragons participated in the Northern Regionals on Wednesday at the Cross Center in Bangor seeded 6th in the Class C division and were pitted against the #3 rated Lady Pirates from Piscataquis Community High School. During their 14-4 regular season the Pirates had victories against GSA, Dexter, PVHS, Schenck, Greenville, Orono, Lee Academy and lost a game to #1 seeded Stearns by just 4-points.

The visiting Lady Dragons had a slow start in the opening frame with Jennie Cox hitting two baskets and Shawna Monk a hoop while their counter-parts delivered 12-points with Olivia Hunt pacing the attack with 3-conversions. Sadie Smith and Jennie scored in the second period for Woodland, and Piscataquis had 11-more led by Lexi Harris with 5-points. Through the opening 16 Woodland had problems controlling the ball, resulting in 10 turnovers while their counterparts released the ball four times. The teams entered the lockers midway with PCHS sporting a 23-10 advantage.

In the third frame Sadie Smith and Shaye Beers each chipped in on the 5 points, while the Lady Pirates had a solid 17-point effort to effectively close out the game, as they were leading 40-15. During the final stanza Cox and Smith had 3 each and Coach Ripley had the opportunity to get other players on the floor. The game ended with the hosts collecting a 53-21 win. Also worth noting, the Lady Dragons only had 3-turnovers in the second half while their counterparts had 6.

It has been a good many years since the Lady Dragons have been in Bangor. This season’s team set this accomplishment as one of their goals, and they were able to achieve it even though placed in the upper Class C bracket. Also, these scrappy young ladies were midway in the season the #1 rated team in C, a special accomplishment for a team with around only 120-students in the school. Lady Dragons, congratulations on a fine season!

In the game stats Jennie Cox paced the offense along with Sadie Smith earning 9/8-points respectively. Defensively they had 1/2 steals and 5/4-rebounds each. Shaye Beers used her quickness to earn a big 4 steals while delivering 4-assists and scoring 2 points. Shawna Monk led the boards, bringing down 7 rebounds and scored 2 points.
