Shead Tigerettes Compete In States

 

Oakes Paces Vinalhaven Win With 28-Points 

 

The two #2 seeded winners from the Northern & Southern Regionals in Class D Ladies basketball squared off at the Bangor Cross Center at 1:05 on Saturday. Shead was 19-2 on the season while their Southern counterparts brought a 17-4 mark to the State final. 

The Tigerettes opened the game with good balance as Holly Preston, Katelyn Mitchell, and Cassidy Wilder all chipped in the 9-point output, but Gilleyanne Davis-Oakes continued as the Vikings stimulus by hitting 8-points in the opening eight to help the guests to achieve an early 13-9 advantage. 

The two teams played equally well in the second period with each earning 11-points. Cassidy Wilder paced Shead with 6, while Vinalhaven again saw junior captain Gilleyanne (# 21) lead her squad with a big 10-points. 

The Vikings opened the third with Davis-Oakes and Bickford connecting for 6-points each which after 24-minutes of play gave Vinalhaven an eleven point advantage, 41-30. 

As hard as the Tigerettes tried, the spread remained fairly constant throughout the ending 8-minutes seeing each team scoring 14-points and the Vinalhaven Vikings earning the 2017 Class D Ladies State Championship with a 55-44 victory.  

Holly Preston had a big fourth with 8-points and again paced the Tigerettes with 22-points. Cassidy Wilder connected for 11, and Katelyn Mitchell added 7 in the tough loss. Davis-Oakes powered her Viking squad with 28-points, with Dennison, Doughty, and Bickford each adding 6-points in the title win.
