By Kaileigh Deacon

The Calais School Committee met on Wednesday June 21 at 6pm in the Calais Middle-High School Library. Superintendent Jenkins, Bob Greenlaw, John Hill, Lea Farrar, and Joseph Footer were in attendance, James MacDonald was absent.

A change was made to the agenda to add item G, the Superintendent’s Recommendation to hire John Francis. The motion was accepted and the night’s agenda was approved. Following, the committee read and approved the previous meeting’s minutes.

Under public participation teacher Stephanie Griffin presented the School Committee with the fourth quarter newsletter, a publication started earlier this year.  Also the people in attendance were given the chance to comment on the use of ESEA (Elementary Secondary Education Act)

In his report Superintendent Jenkins advised the committee that he has given serious consideration to creating a policy committee this summer to work on the cell phone polices among others. The committee will be comprised of school committee members, school teachers and staff, and parents that wish to participate.

Jenkins also presented the committee with an update regarding the bus contract with First Student. After their meeting Baring has decided to not share a bus contract with Calais as it has done in the past, however, Robbinston has put forward that they would be interested in combining a contract with Calais.

Jenkins: I’ve had several conversations with First Student and I think we have what I believe a very good contract for Robbinston.

Jenkins said a more final contract should be available by Friday. The cost wouldn’t go up for Calais it would stay close to the contract and total presented at the last meeting.

In administration reports all reported that the end of the year went smoothly. Special Education had their audit which they passed. Maryanne Spearin also spoke about the kitchen staff at the high school

Spearin: I just want to thank the kitchen staff. The last couple of weeks they really stepped up and filled in where it was needed, with the help of the office staff. I know that the office staff really helped out with the paperwork.

Under new business the school committee hired all seven of the Superintendent’s recommendations for positions. They hired Joshua Morgan as a secondary English teacher. Erika Pratt was hired as the secondary science teacher.  Austin Ginn will take over the Automotive Instructor position for St. Croix Regional Technical Center. Carrie Gaudette will be the new kindergarten teacher at the elementary school. Robin Roehrich will head the summer food program at the Calais Elementary School. Mike Hollingdale will take the 32 hour per week custodial position.

Prior to acting on the final item the Committee broke into executive session so members who hadn’t been at the previous meeting could be brought up to speed on the discussions on last week’s executive session discussion. The final position was the hiring of John Francis under the contract terms discussed at the previous meeting’s executive session.

The next school committee meeting will be held on Monday, July 17 at 6pm in the Calais Middle-High School Library.  A summer meeting schedule will be decided at this meeting.
