While most kids have wrapped up their baseball season and are spending time at the pool, some have continued on to begin practicing on one of two Calais-area fall baseball teams.  The teams are part of the Eastern Maine Fall Baseball League which focuses on fundamentals and sportsmanship.

Matt Vinson, who formed the area's only fall team for ages 9 to 12 two years ago, is pleased to be offering a second team this year.  The new team is for kids ages 12 to 14.

"Try-outs for the teams were held last Sunday and were open to kids from Perry to Indian Township and the small towns in between and in the outskirts," Coach Vinson said.  "I'm very pleased with the number who want to play this year, which proves that there is a love of the game here."  And from last year's team, he said, all have returned to play again.

Vinson will be joined by Matt Dana as assistant coach for the older group.  "Matt brings great knowledge of coaching and knows most of the kids well.  He's well-respected and enthusiastic about the sport.  I'm looking forward to working with him."

For the 9 to 12 year olds, Spencer Thigpen has stepped up to coach.  "Like Matt (Dana), Spencer is very qualified and he proved that this past season as a little league coach.  He works well with the kids and has a lot to offer them with his style of coaching," Vinson stated, adding, "I am anticipating good things with his team."

Vinson explained that with fall baseball, the kids always show marked improvement the following spring on their respective teams.  "This bodes well for the future of baseball in the Calais/Baileyville area.  Having the baseball season extended from the previous two to three months of little league or Cal Ripken, these kids will play for six straight months which will certainly help baseball at the junior high and high school levels."

Games for the two teams will begin the first weekend of September and will continue through mid-October.  Double-headers in the fall league are held every Sunday at various locations.

Each player on the 9 to 12 year old team has use of jerseys sponsored by The Calais Advertiser and Machias Valley News.  The new team for the older group is currently fundraising with the sale of prize calendars to help offset costs of new uniforms.  Many local businesses, as well as Stephen King and Under Armour, have donated prizes which will be drawn each day in August.  The cost of calendars are $10 each and can be purchased from any player on the older team or at Rachel Ashley Jewelers in Calais.
