This past weekend a team from Calais Little League traveled to Millinocket to participate in the 1st annual Mt. Katahdin Baseball classic.  The inaugural tournament featured teams from Millinocket, Caribou, and Calais.  After winning three games with no losses on Saturday, the Calais team advanced to the championship game on Sunday, only to finish second to the champions from Caribou.

In the first game of the tournament, Calais bested Millinocket by a score of 14 to 1, behind a strong pitching performance by Max Fleming, who got the win. Tyler Furtek came in as a relief pitcher to secure the victory.  At the plate, Calais was paced by Braden Barrett who went 3 for 4 with three runs scored.  Andrew Barnard was 2 for 2 with two runs scored, Max Cassidy was 1 for 1 with an RBI and a run scored, and Muwin Dana was drilled with a fastball, but shook it off and made his way around the bases for a run scored.

Calais won its second game of the tournament against eventual champions Caribou in a pitching duel for the ages.  Calais starter, Zach Brides pitched a complete game, striking out 17 Caribou batters.  Caribou starter, Alex Levesque, matched Bridges pitch for pitch, also going the distance and striking out 14. Bridges did not give up any earned runs, and Levesque gave up only one earned run.  Ryland Sabattus belted a triple in the seventh inning and was promptly knocked in by Matthew “Skinny” Dana, giving Calais a 4-3 extra innings win.

Game three saw Calais matched up again with Millinocket, with Calais coming out on top by a score of 16-6.  Calais was paced by winning pitcher Ryland Sabattus who also went 3 for 3 at the plate with 1 RBI and 2 runs scored.  Max Fleming was 3 for 3 with 3 RBI and 3 runs scored, Skinny Dana was 3 for 3 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored, and Cyrus Sewell was 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored.

Calais lost to Caribou in the championship game in an offensive shootout.  Calais dug deep against a hot Caribou team with Max Fleming, Ti Bennet, Faith Thigpen, and Skinny Dana all taking an inning or two on the mound.  At the plate, Max Fleming was 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored and Ryland Sabattus was 2 for 3 with a run scored.
