Monday, was the “Let’s Talk About It” reading group at the library. We had eleven members attending and a lively discussion about the mills and young women from rural areas who were recruited to work in Lowell Massachusetts. Brenda Trout and Fran Betz made delicious treats for a social time which followed.

The Stroudwater Christian Church Mission Group from Portland has been here in Princeton all this week. Twenty-two teens and twenty adults, all volunteers, provided a children’s camp at the Princeton Elementary School, gave the campers lunch and also take-home food items. This special group saves food items and funds all year in order to come to Princeton and work on these helpful projects. Additionally, they made repairs to a family’s home and built a pavilion at Brewer Andrews Ball Field, which will benefit the community. On Thursday, they had a barbeque social at Lots of Tots. This is their seventh year coming to the area and they are already making plans for next year. It is nice to have a group that supports our small town and all their efforts are recognized and appreciated by Princeton’s residents.

Wednesday from 2:00 - 3:00 at the Princeton Library will be the last workshop in the 4-H Science Series. Sandy Copel-Parsons, from the 4-H Community Education Division has inspired the youngsters with science projects for six weeks. This last week, she will be teaching them about exploring flight with an introduction to drones and the participants will get to take home a foam plane. Some snacks will be provided as a treat for the last session. Sandra already is looking ahead to being able to provide some more programs for the fall.

On Friday, August 4 at 6:00 p.m. the Princeton Parks and Recreation Committee with the help of the Princeton Fire Department volunteers, will be having a Slip’n Slide Kick Ball Game at Brewer Andrews Field. This is the second year of doing the event and it is a lot of fun for the kids. Popcorn and drinks will be available. Also if you missed the Friends of Princeton’s Flea Wheeling in July, in August the PPRC is will be having their first community yard sale. So start rummaging for some items to sell.

Now to follow up on the story in June about Emily Curtis from Princeton and Sophie McVicar from Calais who are members of the 8th grade girls Amateur Athletic Union basketball team from Central and Eastern Maine called the “Gilman Street Surge”. They attended the AAU National Championships in Orlando Florida in July. As part of Division II, they qualified for the semifinals of the twenty-six team event. They defeated teams from New York, Rhode Island and Texas but lost to a California and Virginia team. They finished in fourth place, which is a huge accomplishment for the Maine team from Washington County. Also noted that they held these opposing teams to an average of 36.5 points per game. They normally scored over 50 points. As part of this Maine team, Emily and Sophie were able to have this “Experience of a Lifetime” thanks to all those people that supported them with financial contributions.

I, personally, had a fun weekend with two of my grand daughters who were visiting with four of their friends. They enjoyed using the paddle boat but said they all didn’t fit into it anymore. I jokingly suggested they could pay for their keep by helping us to paint the garage and they took me up on it. In a couple of hours they were done. Nothing like young energy. We thanked them with a pizza lunch and I made them some brownies.
