The 2017 Moosehorn Ghost Run was a runner’s dream. Cool temperatures, no wind, and somewhat cloudy conditions greeted runners from all over Washington, Hancock, Aroostook and Charlotte (N.B) Counties. This is the 4th year of the run and it drew a good crowd with 39 individual runners and nine 2 or 3-person relay teams for the 13.1 miles or half marathon through Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge (NWR). Funds raised from the event went to Friends of Moosehorn NWR, who are being revitalized through an active group of board members. With support from Sunrise Athletic Club, a group of active outdoor enthusiasts, the 2017 event was an overall success!

Race winner Erik Knickerbocker from Hamden, running 1:21:41 or 6:15 per mile set the new course record for the 2017 event. Jennifer Vandongen from Bar Harbor was the first female to finish, also setting a course record in a time of 1:32:51. The first three person relay team running 1:36:20 was Team N.B. (Mark McCologan, Dawson Mossman, Tim McDonough) from St. John, New Brunswick. The first youth team, Pumpkin Pounders (Core Sanchez, Brian Duffy, Siobhan Duffy) were local athletes from Eastport, Perry and Pembroke running at time of 2:02:21.

The Friends group supports the goals and objectives of Moosehorn Wildlife Refuge while encouraging all user types to use the refuge. Visit the moosehornfriends.org soon for more information. Runners were provided food and goodies after the race from donations from the following race sponsors; Walmart, Tradewinds Supermarket, Ace Hardware, Dunkin Donuts, The First Bank of Calais, Washington County Community College, King China, and Just South of the Border Restaurant.
