MCF Awards Grant for Design of Devil’s Head Tower

The Friends of Devil’s Head announced Friday that the Maine Community Foundation has approved their request for a $1,000 grant for a local engineer to design a wooden observation tower at the top of Devil’s Head. Overlooking the St. Croix River, the 340’ granite bluff is the second-highest point on the Eastern seaboard. The view of the river and St. Croix Island is obscured by the growth of trees in recent years. Rather than mass-cutting the growing trees, the Friends of Devil’s Head have opted to consider putting up an observation tower to enable visitors to enjoy a panoramic view of the surrounding area. Having the potential wooden design completed will enable the Friends of Devil’s Head to determine its short- and long-term feasibility compared to a metal structure.
