On Saturday, December 16th, the Second Baptist Church in Calais held its annual Christmas concert. The singing started at 6:30 p.m. and went on until around 8:30 p.m. Several church members and visiting guests performed during the evening.

“They’ve been doing this for quite a few years, but last year got snowed out. It’s just an event that we have and everybody in the community who are affiliated with the church, and some from other churches, come and sing. It’s a night of Christmas music,” said Church-member Gloria Philips.

The performers of the evening, who ranged in ages from 3-80, included Released and Unleashed (George Stevens, Pam Price, Karen Hastings, Dr. Larry Newman and Lenny Hanson), the Burden Family (Pastor Matt Burden, Rachel Burden, Josiah Burden, Sam Burden and Lydia Burden), the Second Baptist Praise Team (Zach and Ruby Johnson, Brad Phillips, Gloria Phillips, Kathy Francis, Tammy Ginn, Pauline and Steve McFadden), the Second Baptist Church Children’s Choir and Adult Choir, and individual performers Cassidy Carr, Kathy Francis, Tammy Ginn, Gloria Phillips, Tessa and Joshua McArthur.

The church usually holds monthly gospel concerts, but this one was more festive than the others. ‘Joy to the World’, ‘Gloria’, and many other Christmas tunes were sung throughout the night. The night was finished with a time of fellowship, but this will not be the last of the holiday season. There will be more celebrating before Christmas is over. On Christmas Eve the adult choir will be presenting the Christmas Cantata ‘What a Beautiful Name’. “We do the Cantata and then end the evening with a candle light service,” said Phillips. The celebration will begin at 6 p.m. at the Second Baptist Church in Calais.
