FEDCAP to Hold Winter Clothing Drive

By Lura Jackson

Obtaining adequate clothing for the winter season can be a costly endeavor, especially when financial resources are already limited and there are multiple family members to cover. For the participants of FEDCAP Career Center who are in the process of transitioning into local jobs, having inadequate clothing is a sadly familiar scenario. To address that need, FEDCAP is holding a clothing drive to collect winter clothing for adults and their children.

“FEDCAP participants are all on a limited budget,” explained Mary Pelletier, Employment & Community Services Specialist at FEDCAP in Calais. She said that while all clothing items will be accepted, the highest need is for footwear and jackets. A large majority of FEDCAP participants are women, many of whom do not have a partner in the home to help share the costs and requirements of caring for their children.

While the current clothing drive is for winter clothing, FEDCAP also accepts ongoing donations of any “good condition” professional clothing that may be used for job interviews or on the job training, including hospital scrubs, suits, and dress shoes.

If you have new or gently used items that you would like to donate for the benefit of the FEDCAP families, please drop them off at the FEDCAP building at 10 Barker Street. The clothing drive is officially being held on Saturday, January 20th between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.; however, if you aren’t able to drop off your items then, you may do so during the week between Tuesday and Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Any items that are not taken by FEDCAP participants will be passed on to AMHC for the usage of their clients, or distributed to the Calais Community Thrift Store to be recirculated into the community.
