Devotional - “Heaven: I Want to Be There”

By Rev. Robert Oliver

I was sitting in the living room reading a book when all of a sudden, my 3-year-old son, Aaron, appeared with 2 spoons and a jar of peanut butter. He went through a great deal of work in order to get this for him and his little sister Leah. He had to pull a chair over to the kitchen and climb over the baby gate, then find 2 spoons and the peanut butter. Then he had to bring them to me and ask if they could have some (it’s always hard to say no to the babies).

As they joined me on the couch and started to enjoy their sticky and tasty treat, I thought of the many times when I’ve been caught in a “sticky” situation. For example, telling a little white lie because I don’t want to hurt the other person’s feelings (yes, I’m a people pleaser), but then it backfires when the person figures out I wasn’t being honest. Another example is waiting until last minute on things, such as waiting until Saturday night to write a sermon, or waiting until 9:35 Sunday morning to get ready for church when we’re supposed to leave at 9:30! Life is full of sticky situations.

So how do we handle these sticky situations? Proverbs 24:16 says, “The righteous falls seven times and rises again, but the wicked stumble in times of calamity.” Christians are not perfect. We get ourselves into sticky situations all the time and make the wrong decisions. When we get into these situations, instead of giving up or beating ourselves up, we reach out for God’s hand and He pulls us up. We learn, we grow, and hopefully, we have the opportunity to help someone else in the same situation.

Aaron and Leah enjoyed their peanut butter, and then they fell asleep next to me with peaceful expressions on their faces. When God gets us through a “sticky” situation, we can rest as well, and the “…peace of God that passes all understanding will guard our hearts and minds through Christ Jesus our Lord!” (Philippians 4:7)
