Driver Arrested After Striking 9-Year-Old Cyclist

On Sunday, April 22, approximately 2:30 in the afternoon, deputies with the Washington County Sheriff's Office responded to Rim Rd. in East Machias to investigate a motor vehicle versus pedestrian crash.

During the course of the investigation, deputies determined that a 9-year-old male juvenile was operating a bicycle across the roadway when he was struck by a motor vehicle operated by 25-year-old Chris Howard of Cutler. There were no life-threatening injuries.

During the course of the investigation, Howard was determined to be operating without a license and was arrested for that crime and taken to the Washington County Jail.

The crash investigation is ongoing. Machias Police Department, Machias Ambulance Service, and East Machias Fire Department assisted at the scene.
