PBS’s The Roosevelts: An Intimate History to Preview in Eastport

PBS’s 2014 fall season will lead off with the seven-part, fourteen hour documentary that follows the Roosevelt family for more than a century.  Internationally acclaimed filmmaker, Ken Burns has produced this first time ever series that chronicles the personal and private lives of Theodore, Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, interwoven into a single narrative.

Featured heavily in the documentary and of special interest to Maine and Canadian viewers are the years that Franklin and Eleanor were summer residents on Campobello Island.  Legendary actress Meryl Streep portrays Eleanor Roosevelt in readings from her personal letters and writings.  Edward Herrmann, Emmy Award nominee, is the voice of Franklin Roosevelt.

Episode 4 of the series features the Roosevelts on Campobello Island. A special Preview Screening of the documentary will be held at the Eastport Arts Center, Washington Street in Eastport on Sunday, August 24th.  Eastport joins Portland and Bangor as a special Preview site.  The Preview is being presented locally by a collaboration of MPBN,  Roosevelt Campobello International Park and The Atlantic Leadership Institute of Eastport, sponsor of the Elderhostel/Road Scholar summer programs “Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt on Campobello Island, this year celebrating its 20th year.

Two free special Preview Showings will take place at The Eastport Arts Center on August 24th -- a Matinee at 3:00 p.m. EST, and an evening showing at 7:00 p.m. EST.  While free, seating is limited and those attending must obtain a free ticket online from MPBN at https://www.mpbn.net/Events/TheRoosevelts.aspx   The film is one hour long and will be followed by tea and cookies.  Representatives of Roosevelt Campobello International Park will be on hand for the Preview, as will Linda Godfrey, President of The Atlantic Leadership Center, along with area persons who are presenters at the Elderhostel/Road Scholar programs  on Campobello.  Information about the Elderhostel/Road Scholar program may be obtained at www.roadscholar.org/ and enter key words: Roosevelts on Campobello Island.
