Doctor Strange Is A Marvel and Success

By Kaileigh Deacon

These days it seems as if there are superhero or comic book movies coming out all the time. Marvel has found that there is a market for movies based on comic book characters and heroes and is furiously meeting the demand. I will say that I am a fan of these movies and enjoy watching them because they certainly hold entertainment.

Doctor Stephen Strange is one of the best neurosurgeons in the world but after a car accident takes away what he values most he is left questioning where he belongs. On a quest to find a way to get his life back, Dr. Strange learns that all he knows is only a small piece of the puzzle. In order to find his answers he must embrace things he never dreamt; mysticism and alternate dimensions. Dr. Strange will find that he will have to act as a middle man between New York and what lies beyond.

I went into this without knowing anything about the comics or the story line or how the characters were supposed to be. I went in with expectation of the other Marvel movies a lot of action and an okay story but entertainment either way.

The acting in this movie was on point with as much talent in any other movie. Benedict Cumberbatch adopts an American accent for New Yorker Dr. Stephen Strange. Cumberbatch delivers an exemplary performance as Dr. Strange, fans of Sherlock will recognize characteristics of Cumberbatch’s Sherlock character.  Cumberbatch’s character is a balance of arrogance and humor that keeps him likeable to the audience. Tilda Swinton also wows with her performance along with Rachel McAdams and Mad Mikkelsen.

One thing that cannot be ignored is the astounding visual effects this movie has to offer. In a movie that incorporates magic, mysticism, and alternate dimensions the demand on visual effects is huge however this film pulls it all off flawlessly. Each space has its own distinctive look and feel bringing the audience along for the ride. A word of warning to those that find they get dizzy watching things that twist and turn there is a lot of that it in some of the worlds so be prepared.

The storyline was interesting with the combination of mysticism and reality was appealing and enjoyable. The struggle of the characters to accept what was happening made it easier for the audience to accept as well.  There was more to the story than just a fight between the good guys and the bad guys, it was about time, right, wrong, and the choices we make.

I would give this movie a four  out of five stars. It was thoroughly entertaining with a nice balance of action and humor. Almost immediately I was pulled into the story by the characters and the action.

This movie will have you engaged and entertained from start to finish and left wondering what the next installment will bring.
